The problem with asking a general AI about your project

If you've ever typed a project management question into a general-purpose chatbot, you'll recognise what comes back: a structured list of reasonable-sounding techniques that don't quite fit your situation. That's because the tool doesn't know your situation. It only knows the question you just typed.

Ask a general AI "how do I handle a slipping schedule?" and you get a list of generic recovery techniques. Ask PM Mentor the same question, and it knows you're running a Waterfall project in execution phase, three weeks behind on a fixed-deadline contract, with a team of eight, and a dependency risk you logged last month. That context changes everything about the answer.

PM Mentor holds a structured record of your project and uses it to give you advice that's actually about your project — not about projects in general.

How it works

You create a project record. You talk to your adviser. It gives you grounded, specific guidance — and explains the principle behind it so you get better at project management, not just at using the tool.

Your project record

You fill in a short form covering your project's name, organisation, sector, methodology, current phase, dates, budget range, and team size. The most important field is the plain-language description — a clear summary of what you're trying to deliver. The adviser reads all of this before it responds to anything you type.

Methodology selection — if you're not sure where to start

Not sure whether your project calls for Waterfall, Agile, Hybrid, or Stage-Gate? PM Mentor runs a short discovery conversation — eight questions — and recommends the right approach for your context. It explains what each methodology means in practice, and you can override its recommendation at any time. You stay in charge.

Advice grounded in established PM frameworks

Every recommendation draws on recognised PM methodologies: PMI PMBOK, APM Body of Knowledge, Agile, Scrum, Hybrid, Stage-Gate, and Six Sigma. You're not getting improvised advice — you're getting the PM field's best thinking applied to your specific context. The adviser is calibrated to your methodology, so Agile projects get Agile answers and Waterfall projects get Waterfall answers.

PM Mentor is independent and not affiliated with PMI, APM, AXELOS, the Agile Alliance, or any standards body.

Teaches, not just tells — the "Why this works" note

After any judgement call, PM Mentor adds a short explanation of the PM principle behind the advice. Not a lecture. One paragraph that tells you why this approach works in your situation and what it's based on. Over time, you build genuine PM capability. You stop needing the tool for things you've already understood.

The decision log — an audit trail for every key call

After any AI response, you can mark it as the basis for a decision. PM Mentor captures a snapshot of your project record and the AI's advice at that moment. You can add an outcome note later — what happened, whether the advice held up. Export the full log as a PDF at any time. Your project has an honest record of what you decided and why.

Share with your team

Invite colleagues to your project at Viewer or Commenter level. Viewers can read the conversation history and decision log. Commenters can also contribute questions. Your project conversations stay private to the people you choose.

The ECCSR Framework — Ethical, Collaboration, Creating, Sustainable, Results

ECCSR values — when it matters, it'll tell you

PM Mentor's advice draws on the ECCSR framework — Ethical, Collaboration, Creating, Sustainable, Results. The adviser references it when a specific pillar is genuinely at stake in your situation. Not in every response — only when it matters.

ECCSR was developed by Joe Houghton from 30 years of project practice and published in Project Management Made Easy: The ECCSR Approach.

New to project management? That's exactly who this is for.

PM Mentor was designed with experienced PMs in mind — but you don't need to be one to use it. If you're running your first project and you're not sure what you don't know, that's where it's most useful.

  • PM Mentor recommends a methodology and explains what it means in practice — you don't need to know the jargon before you start.
  • Every piece of advice comes with a plain-English explanation of why it works. You're learning as you go.
  • It tells you when a situation is outside PM best practice — and when you need specialist advice (legal, HR, financial) rather than a PM perspective.
  • It gives you numbered next steps, not a wall of theory. You always know what to do next.
  • You can ask the same question ten different ways without it getting frustrated with you.

You don't need to know what "critical path" or "earned value" means to use PM Mentor. But you might know what they mean by the end.

How it compares to asking a general-purpose AI

General-purpose AI chatbots are genuinely useful tools. But they're designed for breadth, not depth in your specific situation. Here's the practical difference.

What PM Mentor won't do

PM Mentor is an adviser, not a task tracker. It doesn't create Gantt charts, manage your backlog, run your sprint, or send meeting invites. There are good tools for all of those things. PM Mentor's job is to help you think clearly about the decisions those tools can't make for you.

It also won't replace a solicitor, an HR professional, or a financial adviser. For situations involving contracts, employment decisions, significant financial commitments, or regulatory obligations, it'll tell you directly that you need qualified specialist advice — and it won't try to fill that gap.

All decisions remain yours. PM Mentor advises. You decide.
